How to Play Video Poker

What do you do if you need to have the excitement of poker but can’t get a group of friends together? This might be a perfect time for you to try out video poker online. Video poker combines the skill and concentration of a real poker game with the excitement of a slot machine. Now it’s time to learn how to play.

The rules are very simple, especially if you’ve ever played a game of five card draw. The basic principle is that you start with a five card hand, and then you can exchange any number of those cards for new ones from the deck. Depending on the particular game you’re playing, you may get to exchange cards one or two times.

Normally draw poker is played against other players, like most poker games, but video poker reduces poker to it’s simplest form and pits you against a computer. This means no wait times, and fast-paced action. There are a variety of variations on video poker, but the standard version is called ‘Jacks or Better.’ The goal is to end up with a 5 card that is equal to a pair of Jacks or better. Do you have what it takes to beat the machine?

The construction of a video poker machine is simple as well. There are generally two buttons somewhere on the machine that say “Deal/Draw” and “Cash Out,” as well as one button under each card that says “Hold.” After inserting your money, you press the “Deal/Draw” button to begin.

You will then be dealt 5 cards. You must choose which of those cards you want to keep, and which you want to throw away. To do this, you press the “Hold” button under each card you want to keep. This should make the word “Hold” appear across the card on the screen. You’ll want to keep your higher cards like aces or kings, and any pairs. You can also try to get lucky and hold onto cards that could turn into a straight or flush.

Once you’ve selected all the cards you want to keep, you press the “Deal/Draw” button. This will replace all the cards that did not say “Hold” with new ones. Then you check to see if the new hand is better or equal to a pair of Jacks. If it is, you make some money!

The amount of money you make depends on how good your hand is. For example, a flush will make much more than a pair of kings. However, a pair of kings is much easier to come by. Will you throw away one of your kings to try and draw into a flush? This is the kind of tough decision video poker is all about. Well, are you excited yet? Now that you know how to play, try playing video poker online today!
